SAUVIGNON BLANC

Fresh green and pepper-like flavours with hints of fig, litchi and gooseberry. Frequently blended with Sémillon.

CHENIN BLANC

The most widely cultivated grape in the Cape Winelands is characterised by its versatility. It has a pleasing fruitiness that finds favour with a range of palates.

CHARDONNAY

Tropical fruit notes pair well with white meats and fish when the wine has had less exposure to oak. More heavily oaked Chardonnays complement spicy or smoked food.

CHARDONNAY/ PINOT NOIR

A popular duo in the creation of sparkling wines globally. Flavour profile ranges from crisp and fresh tasting to steely and mineral driven, and even toasty bread and butter.

PINOT GRIGIO

Grapes are harvested early to retain as much freshness as possible; common descriptors are light, crisp and dry. Complemented by aromatic notes of lemon, green apple and blossoms.

MERLOT ROSÉ

Made with red grapes, where the juice is given less skin contact after crushing. Rosé embodies the same flavour of its red wine varietal counterpart, albeit a subtler version.

PINOT ROSÉ

With less skin contact, the light ruby-red hue of this grape variety delivers some stunning shades of pink. A large proportion is used in Cap Classique sparkling wines.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Produces top-class wines that develop well with age into spicy, full, complex wines. As in Bordeaux, it may be blended with Merlot or its relative, Cabernet Franc.

SHIRAZ

A noble variety of French origin. Better known as Syrah elsewhere, it yields deep purple, smoky and spicy wines that develop a complex character with age.

MERLOT

Traditionally used as a blending partner to add softness and breadth to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot is now increasingly being bottled as a varietal wine.

PINOTAGE

A cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, Pinotage is unique to South Africa. It can produce complex and fruity wines with age but is also very drinkable when young.

PINOT NOIR

Lighter in colour than other red grapes with flavours of rose, black cherry, berry and currant. Quality depends on cellar management.

CABERNET MERLOT

Classic blending partners. Merlot adds softness and breadth to the more pronounced characteristics of Cabernet.

RED BLEND

With each blend deriving characteristics from its specific blending partners. Blends are becoming increasingly popular for being complex, yet harmonious.
